After 35 years of regular service in the Royal Air Force Air, Commodore Linter joined the New Club in April 2021 as the Secretary and CEO.
After reading mathematics at Oxford, his RAF career included flying Tornado in the Ground Attack and Reconnaissance roles. He commanded 12(B) Squadron at RAF Lossiemouth, has flown combat missions in Iraq and led the first Tornado Wing Detachment to Afghanistan before commanding RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus where he flew the Griffin helicopter.
As an Air Commodore he served with the Americans in the Middle East and was appointed as the Air Attaché to Washington DC in 2017. He was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire in 2010 and the US Legion of Merit in 2016; he has twice been Mentioned in Despatches for gallantry.
Leaving regular service in April 2021, he transferred his commission to the RAF Reserve where he supports Air Officer Scotland. He has been a Trustee of the Union Jack Club, London since 2015 and is one of its directors. A member of the board of Lowland Reserve Forces and Cadet Association, he became its Chairman in September 2024.
Married to Ann, a former nurse who now works with autistic children, he has two grown-up children. Ann and James split their time between Moray and Edinburgh.
